ABSTRACT
A study of canine dirofilariasis was carried out in the city of Merida, Yucatan, Mexico. The objetive was to determine, through the presence of adult worms at necropsy, its prevalence and compare the effectivity of the thick blood drop technique and the modified Knott technique. The study showed a 6.54% prevalence to
Dirofilaria immitis and a 7.47% prevalence to
Dipetalonema reconditum. The modified Knott technique detected 11 positive cases to circulating microfilarias and the thick blood drop technique detected only 3 cases. Two cases of mixed filariasis were detected. Five animals were positive to adult worms at necropsy and 7 positive ones to circulating microfilarias. Two cases showing adult worms at necropsy were not detected by the modified Knott technique. Two other positive cases using this technique did not show adult worms at necropsy. This study showed an average of 6 adult worms per positive case. The parasites were found in different parts of the heart. Three positive cases of
Dipetalonema reconditum were found in urine. It is concluded that for the diagnosis of canine dirofilariasis it is necessary to detect microfilarias in blood and support this with additional techniques.
