ABSTRACT
Influences of parity and months regarding ocurrence of periparturient disorders in Holstein cows were studied. Data from a large commercial dairy herd in northeastern Mexico was studied analizing the reproductive disorders and mastitis cases that ocurred in 6565 lactations. Odds ratio analysis indicated that the risk of retained placenta, milk fever and mastitis increased with parity. Risk of milk fever decreased significantly in the youngest cows (odds ratio = 0.31), but increased markedly in cows with more than 5 calvings (odds ratio = 2.14 to 5.80). The youngest cows had an increased risk of metritis and ovanan cysts (odds ratio = 1.53 and 1.32 for 1-2 parity; P ‹ 0.05). Edward's test indicated that there were significant peaks in March, August, September and July for retained placenta, metritis, ovarian cysts and mastitis, respectively (P ‹ 0.05). No significant seasonal pattern was detected for milk fever.
