New development in the understanding of the relationship between stress and the immune system, have recently emerged. A bidirectional down and up regulation control is proposed. While the hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal axis (HPAA) provokes changes in the immune reponse, various substances derived from the leucocytes, influence the duration and extent of the HPAA to stress. Therefore, chronic and acute stress could induce different immune responses. An insight into these relationships may prompt new ideas in the relation to the manipulation of stress.
