ABSTRACT
Tissue engineering is a bioengineering branch, whose basic principle is the use of a live cellular substrate combined with the design and manipulation of extracellular media to create bioimplants with the purpose to repair, replace, maintain or optimize the functions of the organs or tissues damaged. The tissue engineering techniques used for cartilage repair are: The employment of osteochondral grafts and chondrocytes implantation. Cultivated autologous chondrocytes implantation is an alternative for the repair of articular defects; and this is the first biotechnology applied to the orthopedics surgery. The original studies of this technique were performed in rabbits getting 82 % of good results. The development of these processes have opened another research lines, as the study of growth factors, stem cells and gene therapy.
