The International Donkey Protection Trust (IDPT), the International League for the Protection of Horses (ILPH) and the School of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Science of the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) have continued to operate their programme of assistance to the equids of marginated peasants during the period of July 1992 to June 1993. During this period, 14089 treatments to 10437 animals of 5777 owners were administered. Of the animals, 3833 were donkeys, 4984 horses and 1620 mules. Table 1 shows the pathological conditions that were treated; hoof care and skin lesions were the major problems found. The deworming programme continues to be a priority. The veterinarians in charge continue to give informal lectures on the correct care of their animals to peasants and also in schools. During the month of January, a competition was organized in 2 villages to award prizes to the best care for animals in each group (donkeys, mules and horses). The judges were representatives of IDPT and ILPH who arrived from the UK, the Dean of the Veterinary School and the Head of the Equine Clinics, both from the UNAM. As in the past, valuable assistance was received from the departments of Parasitology, Bacteriology, Pathology and from the Equine Clinics. Many pharmaceutical companies have again donated medicines. We are most grateful to all for this help and interest. Special thanks to Mr. Rincon and Dr. Labrandero for having built the ramps.REFERENCES
