ABSTRACT
A twelve-month (January-December 1988) entomologic survey was conducted to determine the frequency and seasonal distribution of selected hematophagous insects in 2 livestock farms in the Isthmus of Tehuantepec, Mexico. A total of 98,948 insects, representing 12 genera and 62 species, were collected using Centers for Disease Control light traps supplemented with dry ice.
Culicoides spp (49.7%),
Culex nigripalpus (42.6%),
Simulium spp (2.1%) and
Culex coronator (1.9%) were the most frequent insects found in this study. Captured insects included flies and mosquitoes previously identified as potential vectors for bluetongue, vesicular stomatitis and Venezuelan equine encephalitis viruses.
