ABSTRACT
Chronic wounds represent a very high cost for health systems. Negative Pressure Wound Therapy has been used since 1989. Currently, it is an attainable alternative method in any hospital and effective in wound bed preparation, in acute and chronic wounds, and the posterior primary, delayed or secondary closure. It has gradually being accepted among physicians in our country. We evaluated the results obtained using the Negative Pressure Wound Therapy in acute, chronic and complex wounds in the Wounds Clinic at the Hospital Cemain in Tampico, Tamaulipas. We treated 22 patients over a period of 3 years, with injuries of different etiology and evolution. Skin grafts, local flaps and free microvascular transfer were used for definitive closure. We obtained a stable closed wound in the entire group, with a 12 months follow- up, achieving comfort and cost reduction for the patient during the healing process. The time of wound bed preparation is not dependent on the system applied (VAC® Medela® Versatile One®), although we observed higher quality of granulation tissue with the VAC® and a better therapy control.
