ABSTRACT
Peripheral nerve injuries treatment focuses on the type of lesion. Different factors have been used to help nerve stump growth: NGF, GABA, etc. Glycine significant overflow opens NMDA receptor ionic channels highly permeable to Ca+, which regulates extracellular magnesium under the influence of voltage. Wistar rats were used as subjects in this study. The sciatic nerve was exposed in both legs for the electrophysiology procedure to be performed; next, the left nerve was cut transversally and sutured back in place with the epineural technique. After that, a new electrophysiology test was performed to ensure there were no collateral fibers. Study Groups were given glycine 40 mM/kg/d/ip for 15, 30 days and 60 days, while Groups 4, 5, 6 were treated with saline solution 0.9%. Then a new electrophysiological study was performed and the sciatic nerve was prepared for the histopathology study. Results showed a morphologic regeneration occurred 1 month after the nerve injury was done as well as progressive functional recovery, even though it was not completely recovered it was greater in the rats treated with glycine. According to histology, there are differences nerves treated with glycine are similar to not injured nerves.
