ABSTRACT
Introduction: Trauma is one of the leading death causes in Mexico. The effect of EMS systems over mortality has been measured few times, but it has never been compared with non-EMS transportation. The heterogeneity of EMS systems around Mexico justifies measuring the impact of EMS systems in a City with the characteristics of Queretaro, Queretaro, Mexico (Population: 900,000, industrialized) which might be compared to other similar cities in the future.
Methods: We designed this study with the aim to see if EMS transported victims have a different mortality from those not transported by EMS in the city of Queretaro. This is an observational, retrospective study. We obtained patient data from files at the General Hospital in Queretaro, Mexico. We included patients attended from july 1, 2007 to december 21, 2007. We included patients older that 18 years of age, with revised trauma score of 11 or less. We compared mortality rates and hospital length of stay between EMS transported with non-EMS transported patients.
Results: there were a total of 167 traumatized patients from where we obtained 28 files that fulfilled the inclusion criteria (14 EMS-transported vs 14 Non-EMS transported). Two patients from each group died (mortality rates of 14.29% for both groups). Patients transported by the EMS system had 6.5 hospital length of stay (± 6.11)
vs 7.42 days (± 5.69) for the control group with no statistical difference.
Conclusion: EMS transported patients have similar mortality rates and hospital length of stay as those not transported by the EMS system in the City of Queretaro, Mexico.
