ABSTRACT
Since patients often have more than one medical problem, the problem oriented system and evidence based medical management was applied to patients of one and other sex, aged 6 months to 18 years to know the prevalence of allergic diseases in the Pediatrics Unit of the Hospital General de Mexico (HGM). Previous experience on pediatric allergy at HGM is published in two very old papers.
Results: Excluded incomplete cases, data are analized from 1,000 patients. Gender male = 596. Age 5 a 12 years = 675. Main problems rhinosinusitis (RS) = 403 cases and asthma (A) = 314. Cases with more than one problem increase the real casuistry: RS = 620; A = 337. They are added: Sinusitis (S) = 193; Rinitis (R) = 131; Bronchial Hipereactivity (HRB) = 114; Upper airways Infections (IVAS) = 62; Atopic Dermatitis (DA) = 47; Conjunctivitis (C) = 41; Urticaria and/or Angioedema (U/UAE) = 21. Most common associations: RS and A = 201 cases. Starting age: less than 3 years, mainly from 7 months to 1 year of age. Skin tests (PC) positive (+) = 722 cases, negative (-) = 252 and not done in 26. Atopy: negative (0) in 376 patients; (2) in 254 and (1) en 370. Atopy and positive skin tests (+): 0 = 229 (64%); 2 = 190 (76%); 1 = 303 (82%). Most common allergens: house dust mites, cat,
Aspergillus, Candida and
Mucor and oaktree, bermuda and ashtree pollens. Commonest residency: Ixtapalapa in Mexico City and Nezahualcoyotl in State of Mexico.
Discussion: Useful epidemiologic evidence shows problem oriented system is useful in clinical care, medical education and investigation.
