ABSTRACT
Objective: To determine if the nutritional state is one more of the risk factors of mortality in the critically ill patient, hospitalized by an infectious process. Material and methods: All the patients entered the Service of Intensive Therapy between August 2006 to July 2007, without basic pathology that conditioned secondary undernourishment. A bivaried analysis compared life or death related to each one of the studied variables. Results: There were 59 patients; 24 (40.7%) of these had suitable nutritional state, and 35 (59.3%) underwent alterations in the nutrition. Of 19 cases with undernourishment, two passed away (10.5%); of the 16 with obesity four died (25%); and finally, between the 24 eutrophic subjects, there were six (25%) deceases. Relation between mortality and nutrition was not significant (p › 0.05). Conclusions: The patient with some degree of undernourishment displays the same risk of mortality that the eutrophic. It is required of a study that involves a greater sample to confirme or to refuse the results obtained in this series.REFERENCES
