ABSTRACT
In México, pulmonary tuberculosis continues being a problem of public health and it is considered endemic. Its epidemiological variability can be attributed to the appearance of resistant strains caused by an inadequate treatment and concomitant diseases such as AIDS, diabetes mellitus, pulmonary chronic diseases and malnutrition, among others. The current study tries to contribute to the knowledge of tuberculosis through the construction and cultural meanings that this suffering has among sick people in the South of Nuevo Leon, Mexico. A qualitative study was made ( from January to May, 2003 ) through personalized interviews and surveys applied to patients who has suffered or suffer pulmonary tuberculosis from 1996 to May, 2003 in municipalities of the South of Nuevo Leon ( Mexico ). In general, patients said that bad hygienic habits, poor food availability plus lack of food preparation education as well as risk work factors caused by the environment, and alcohol and tobacco consumption were the main causes of this disease. These factors have in common agents that induce to the disease such as life style and poverty in which studied people live; and they also make evident a poor disease knowledge.
