ABSTRACT
A transversal study was made from January to May, 2003 with the purpose of evaluating the periodontal status and its knowledge level about the relation between Diabetes and Periodontal Disease; this survey was applied to 30 diabetic patients of a Control Group from Pio X Health Center Jurisdiction Number 3- Health Services of Nuevo Leon in Monterrey, N.L., Mexico. It was found that 60% of studied patients know the periodontal disease and its relation with Diabetes. 76.6% of studied patients have the habit of brushing teeth. The three most frequent signs of periodontal disease were: bleeding during brushing teeth 50%, loose teeth 43.3%, and gum inflammation 40.0%. Brushing teeth before sleeping while only 13.3% do not brush teeth. The symptoms of periodontal disease more expressed by studied people were: food retention 73.3%, bad breath 70.0%, and sensitive teeth 60.0%. On the other hand, the average periodontal index showed by studied population was 1.0, while the simplified index of dental hygiene was 3.03. Talking about the relation between variables, periodontal index and dental hygiene index, it is observed a correlation value of 0.56 corresponding to a positive tendency and an association level of average and significative level ( p‹0.05)REFERENCES
