ABSTRACT
The main purpose of this research was to define the way in which psychic representations of the desire of maternity determined the decision of a group of women to be put under complicated reproductive treatments such as in vitro fertilization. Patients previously diagnosed with primary sterility, who wanted to try assisted human reproduction (AHR) treatments, specifically those candidates for in vitro fertilization techniques (IVF), were remitted to a public health institution. Interviews were made to a hundred candidates, ten of which were selected to be amply studied. The methodology employed was interpretative in a grounded theory design. This instrument helped to build categories that deepened and broaded the phenomenon under study. Two constant factors that affected the decision of the studied group were found: narcisistic personality and the imaginary child. This analysis included the study of other factors such as gender, family pressures, medical institution, and side effects of this treatment. Through rigorous analysis the information was codified by specific methods (axial coding, selective coding) that allowed the design of a preliminar model that explained the founded categories, their relationship and the temporary procces involved. These results could help in further investigations as a tool for ginecologists and professionals of mental health to increase their comprehension of this population. In order to find applications of the previous results, it was suggested to work with a psychoterapy designed for women who underwent such treatements.REFERENCES
