ABSTRACT
Nowadays the sympathetic response to laryngoscopy and tracheal intubation has been well documented. Pharmacological strategies have been applied to attenuate this response, such as the use of narcotics, which have proven to have an excellent protective response. Methods: The study included 45 patients ASA I and II divided in three groups of 15 patients. Each group recorded time of latency between administration of suphentanyl and laryngoscopy after 2, 3 and 5 minutes respectively. The hemodynamic parameters were measured (heart rate, systolic arterial pressure, diastolic arterial pressure, and mean blood pressure). Results: Significant differences were found in the increase of heart rate and mean arterial pressure between groups 1 and 2, and between groups 1 and 3 (P‹0.05). No significant difference was found between group 2 and 3. Conclusion: The optimum time of latency for laryngoscopy and tracheal intubation was group 2 (3 minutes). It diminishes the hemodynamic response to stress and maintains stability towards induction.REFERENCES
