ABSTRACT
Background: The measurement of blood pressure (BP) in children must be performed in a routine way. However, this may be a problem due to multiple factors. The most common factor is related to the size of the bracelet to de used in this measurement.
Objective: To know the correlation between the figures of the BP measurements recorded by a wristwatch tensiometer (WT) and a bracelet tensiometer (BT).
Material and methods: It was measured the figures of BP through the use of WT and BT tensiometer equipment, using a prospective, descriptive, transversal and observational design, in children whose ages ranged from 72 to 180 months. It was compared the concordance among the readings obtained by the different equipments through the calculation of the interclass correlation coefficient (ICC) in the SPSS program version 15.0 for Windows.
Results: The study included 96 patients, 62 (65%) from the male sex, with an average age of 126 ± 31 months. The average systolic blood pressure (SBP) obtained through the BT was of 104 ± 11 mmHg; and with the BT, it was of 63 ± 8 mmHg. The average diastolic blood pressure (DBP) obtained by the WT was of 63 ± 8 mmHg; and with the BT, it was of 66 ± 8 mmHg. The ICC for the SBPs was of 0.903; and for the DBPs, it was of 0.853 (in both of the cases with a value of p ‹ 0.001).
Conclusions: The concordance among the figures of Bp measured by the WT and the BT was very good for the SBP and good for the DBP.
