ABSTRACT
Introduction. Blastocystis hominis is a polymorphic protozoan that causes blastocystosis, a recently recognized intestinal parasitosis, however many controversial points and unknown factors concerning
B. hominis still exist. Blastocystosis has started to be studied with greater interest in the pediatric population, but available information is still limited in Venezuela.
Objective. To determine the prevalence and clinical relevance of
B. hominis infection in a sample of children admitted to the “Ruíz y Páez” University Hospital in Ciudad Bolívar, Venezuela.
Material and methods. A fecal parasitology study was carried out from January to May 1998 on 115 children of both sexes aged under 12 years old and admitted to the pediatric services of the “Ruíz y Páez” University Hospital. A fecal sample obtained by spontaneous evacuation was analyzed by direct examination in 0.85% saline solution and lugol and by the concentration methods of Faust and Willis. The children parasitized with
B. hominis were submitted to clinical evaluation.
Results. Infection with some parasite and/or commensal was present in 62.6% of the sample (72/115). The prevalence of
B. hominis was 13% (15/115). The infection did not show age (χ
2= 6,96 f.g. = 5) or sex (p › 0.05) preference. The protozoan was present in association with other microorganisms in 53.3% of cases and as the only parasite in 46.7%.
Giardia lamblia was the parasite most frequently present in association. Symptoms were present in 66.7% of cases and absent in 33.3%. Fatigue, abdominal pain and headache were the most frequent clinical findings.
Conclusion. The prevalence of
B. hominis infection in the group under study was relatively high, however, further studies using control groups are necessary to determine the actual clinical importance of this controversial intestinal parasite.
