ABSTRACT
Introduction. The larvicidal activity of plant essential oils and their derivates makes possible to use them as candidates for an alternative control method against
Aedes aegypti larvae.
Objective. To determine the larvicidal activity of four essential oils extracted from widely-spread plants in Cuba against
Aedes aegypti larvae.
Materials and Methods. Larvicidal bioassays were carried out according to the methodology recommended by the World Health Organization. Mortality reading was recorded after 24 h of exposure. Data were processed by means of the Probit-Log software, which provides LC
50 and LC95 values, in addition to the equation for the regression line. A χ
2 test was used to compare the relationship between dosages and mortality values obtained as well as to compare the slope of regression lines.
Results. The essential oils tests showed a high larvicidal activity on
Aedes aegypti. Piper auritum essential oil showed the highe st larvicidal activity with the lowest CL
50=0.0017 value, followed by
Pimenta racemosa (LC
50=0.0027 value),
Chenopodium ambrosioide (LC50= 0.0035 value) and
Piper aduncum (LC
50= 0.0057 value). Values for χ
2 demonstrated that the mortalities produced by each essential oil are associated to the dosages used. When applying the χ
2 analysis to the slope values, a significant difference was found, which indicates that the essential oils have a different effect to the same strain.
Conclusion. These results suggest a potential use of the four essential oils tested to control
Aedes aegypti, from which,
P. auritum oil is the most recommended as it showed high larvicidal activity and low CL
50.
