ABSTRACT
Introduction. The intestinal infections caused by the species belonging to the genera Vibrio,
Aeromonas and Plesiomonas are a health challenge for the public health authorities from around the world.
Objective. To determine the correlation among the methods Aeroesquema and Aerokey II used for the phenotypic identification of microorganisms belonging to the genera Vibrio,
Aeromonas and Plesiomonas. Materials and Methods. In this work 89 of medical Gram negative anaerobic positive oxidase bacilli were studied, isolated from patients with acute diarrhoea. All the isolates were classified in the genus and species according to results from two different methods for phenotypic characterization, “Aeroesquema” and “Aerokey II”.
Results. A total of 89 isolates were identified as: 37
Aeromonas caviae, 24 Aeromonas hydrophila, 9 Aeromonas veronii bv sobria, 2 Aeromonas veronii bv veronii, 1 Aeromonas schubertii, 9 Vibrio cholerae no-O1 and 7
Plesiomonas shigelloides. i> The Aeromonas species more frequently isolated were A. caviae, A. hydrophila and A. veronii bv sobria. By applying the statistical Kappa procedure, we obtained a value of K=0.698630, which shows a good correlation between the two methods. Conclusions. We propose the use of both methods in the country for the identification of microorganisms belonging to the genera Vibrio, Aeromonas and Plesiomonas isolated from patients with acute diarrhoea.
