ABSTRACT
Introduction. Embryonic death in bitches occurs before 25 days of gestation and the products are usually all reabsorbed. The incidence of this condition is not well known but its etiology can be multifactorial including specific infectious agents, particularly B. canis. Affected bitches can have small litters or show no evidence of pregnancy.Clinical case. Clinical findings of spontaneous embryonic death in 4 bitches are described during a routinary pregnancy diagnosis test of 55 females. Bitches were evaluated by ultrasonography 20 days postservice (PS) and evaluated again 30 days PS to confirm pregnancy and to count fetal numbers. Four bitches showed a bloody discharge during the second evaluation and a discrepancy in embryonic vesicle size was observed in the ultrasound; embryonic masses were not present.
Discussion. Pregnancy diagnosis using ultrasonography can be performed from 20 days PS although it can be more efficient when bitches are evaluated until 30 days PS. The embryonic death occurred 20-30 days PS but its etiology remained unknown. Because of the blood stain discharge and the absence of other signs a noninfectious origin is suggested.
