ABSTRACT
Endoscopy has gained a crucial role in high specialty neurosurgery during the last decades. It started being used in neurosurgery 30 years ago and actually is the approach of choice for multiple pathologies. This article reviews the most important applications of neuroendoscopy to today’s neurosurgery. Spontaneous intracranial hemorrhage, hydrocephalus, pituitary adenoma and intraventricular tumors are some of the cases that can be treated through minimal invasion approaches, reducing the morbility, mortality, hospital stay days and costs. Soft tissue management, craniotomy and non-pathologic neural tissue damage is reduced through this technique. After a learning curve and enough experience complications can be reduced compared with classic surgery. We review in this article the world’s literature and INNN Neurosurgical Department’s 10 years experience with neuroendoscopy.
