ABSTRACT
Objective: To ascertain the sensibility and specificity of the FNA in benign and wicked lesions of the breast.
Material and methods: The files of Cytopathology and Pathology were revised in a two year-old period, in search of FNA correlation with histological biopsy.
Results: 778 studies cytology were revised but 277 (35.5%) of them were insufficient and inadequate; 258 cytology studies were recorded but only 150 cases had correlation cyto histology. Benign lesions were most frequent, with a total of 118 cases (78.6%), and wicked 32 (21.4%). The most frequent benign lesion was the fibroadenoma (109 cases), and the ductal carcinoma was the most common among neoplasias (31 cases). The sensibility and specificity in this study were of 100%.
Conclusions: The results of the present study suggest that the FNA has an excellent sensibility and specificity, and is a reliable diagnostic method to help the clinical data to decide the therapeutic behavior.
