ABSTRACT
The annual incidence of abortion in Mexico varies among 50,000 at 1000,000 but the induced abortion is difficult to quantify because it is a very sensitive topic and in some cases illegal.
Material and methods: Objective: to know the incidence of abortions practiced under hospital conditions. Was carried out a retrospective, longitudinal study, observational study on curettage practiced in a community hospital.
Results: During the period of the study 386 operations were carried out due to abortion in process in this community hospital. The annual distribution as follorus: first year 63; second 59; third 55; forth 97; and fifth 12. Age average 24, maximum age 44, minim 13 and mode 23. In the lapse 1999-2000, the following data were obtained: age average of 24, maxim 43, minimum 15 and mode 24; the period 2000-2001 age average 24, maxim 40, minimum 16 and mode 22 years; period 2001-2002 age average 24, maxim 40, minimum 16 and mode 23 years; 2002-2003 age average 24 years, maxim 42, minimum 13 and mode 24 years; period 2003-2004 age average 24.4 years, maxim 44, minimum 14 and mode 23 years.
Discussion: The women that suffer abortion present three sensitive losses 1). a son’s loss, 2). loss of the role of the maternity and 3). loss of the hope and the dreams a that woman cares in having her son. This is the reason for sensitization and psychologic support toward these problems.
