ABSTRACT
Invasive squamous cell carcinoma of the conjunctiva is uncommon, and intraocular extension is very rare. Epidemiological studies have shown that ultraviolet radiation (290-320 nm) and the human papillomavirus types 16 and 18 may play a role in the development of this tumor.
Clinically, these tumors most commonly arise in the interpalpebral area of the perilimbal conjunctiva. They may present as localized, slowly growing lesions that mimic benign conjunctival degenerations and sometimes coexist with pinguecula and pterygia. Long term neglected invasive lesions may spread into the globe or orbit. Squamous cell carcinoma gives seldom regional metastases whereas distant metastases are extremely uncommon.
We report a case of 75 year-old man who after a six week history of symptoms when first seen clinically, had extensive intraocular invasion from a limbal squamous cell carcinoma confirmed by histopathological examination.
