ABSTRACT
With a summary of the main psychological and psychoanalytic approaches and from a clinical perspective, the author considers the origins and treatment of gender identity disorders in children. The discussion centers in the assessment and/or treatment experience of ten Mexican children (nine boys and one girl) and their parents who sought private medical assistance for their child´s gender disorder. The families were all from middle and upper middle urban class and both parents were working professionists. The work with these families suggests the need to rethink the influence of parental psychopathology, specially the father´s. It is considered important to study the role of the projective identification in the transmission of culture and of healthy and pathological psychological structures.
