ABSTRACT
This article highlights the importance of primary prevention or early detection of risk factors for alterations in the emotional development of mother and child. The principal motives for seeking medical attention during and after pregnancy of approximately 70 women at the Perinatal Mental Health Clinic in Kansas, USA are described. The first reported problems were: anxiety linked to marriage problems or domestic violence, fear of labor, to post traumatic stress or to infant abuse or rejection. In second place: pregnancy denial, in third place weight gain during pregnancy, in fourth place depression, in fifth place "destination pathology" and finally different somatic symptoms. Interventions for health professionals to improve mental health of women and their children are proposed.
