ABSTRACT
Introduction. The prevalence of
Helicobacter pylori is higher in patients from developing countries in developed countries, therefore documentation in different geographical areas is important.
Material y Methods. Two hundred and thirty six patients were studied. From each case at least 2 gastric biopsies were taken, one for culture, staining of smears and a rapid urease test. The other for histological analysis.
Results. The bacteria were isolated from 121 patients; also 15 more cases were diagnosed by the urease test or microscopic analysis. 54% showed no degree of gastritis, and 81% peptic ulcers.
Conclusions. The prevalence of
Helicobacter pylori in the analyzed population was 54%, that is relatively low for a development country. However, the age distribution of infected patients shows a characteristic profile of an early infection with a chronic tendency due to the increase of the prevalence with the age.
