ABSTRACT
Objective. To determine the prevalence of and favourable factors for human retrovirus (HIV-1/ and HTLV-I/II) infection in a group of female sex workers in the State of Campeche, Mexico.
Materials and methods. A descriptive and prospective study was carried out on 98 female sex workers (FSW) in the state of Campeche, from September 1996 to August 1997. Blood samples were collected to determine the presence of antibodies against HIV-1 (Ac-VIH-1) and HTLV-I/II (Ac-HTLV-I/II) using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay with synthetic peptides.
Results. The average age was 29 (16-47). 30% were native to Campeche, 24% were from Veracruz, 19% from Tabasco, 25% from other mexican states and 2% from Guatemala. 58% were illiterate or had not completed primary school, 24% had studied primary, secondary or secretarial school. The practice of commercial sex (CS) lasted an average for 4 years (1-17) and each woman had an average of 13 sexual partners a month (1-60). Only 16% used a condom in 100% of their contacts and 36% never used a condom. One or more sexually trasmitted diseases were detected in 20% of the women. No evidence was found of Ac-VIH-1 and Ac-HTLV-I/II in any of the women.
Conclusions. Despite the high risk practices prevalence of HIV-1 and HTLV-I/II in this group of women was zero. Epidemiological data show that the practice of CS in Campeche, Mexico could become an effective mechanism for the dissemination of HIV and HTLV when this group of women converts into a reservoir of these retroviruses.
