ABSTRACT
Obese people are very vulnerable and have a high risk level in their response to traumatism and disease. In the Burn Unit of the Traumatology Hospital «Victorio de la Fuente Narváez» of the IMSS, a comparative study was carried out with a total of 1,911 patients: 1,860 not obese (96.3%) (Group I) and 51 obese (3.7%) (Group II). The patients from group I, 0.8% did not know that they had a disease when suffered burn injury, and in group II, 96.1% did not know. The index (ABSI) for group I had an average of 6.05 and of 7.4 for group II, with a difference of 1.3 (p ‹ 0.002) Group I patients required 2.1 surgeries per patient. Group II required 3.5 surgeries per patient. There was a difference of 1.4 surgeries (p ‹ 0.019). Hospitalization for group I was 15.7 days and for group II hospitalization was 18.64 days. There was a difference of 2.94 days hospitalization (p ‹ 0.002). Burned obese patients had suffered more complications and death in comparison with not obese patients, with an estimated risk of 6.7 and 7.5 respectively. Obesity is one of the most severe factors in burned patients. Obese patients that suffer burn injuries show longer hospitalization and a higher number of surgeries as well as a higher risk for complications and death than a not obese patient.
