Multiple amebic liver abscess

ABSTRACT

In Mexico amoebiasis is a very frequent disease, however amoebic extraintestinal locations as the amoebic liver abscess (ALA), have become scarce since the appearance of potent amoebicidal drugs as metronidazol in 1950. Although very little is known about the clinical outcome of these cases, their current incidence ranges from 90 to 200 cases per year. Most ALA are isolated lesions, mainly located in the right lobe and commonly heal with a proper medical treatment. We report two recent cases admitted to our Intensive Care Unit (ICU), with a fatal outcome. Besides their clinical features we present a bibliographic review and a therapeutic algorithm to study and treat patients with multiple hepatic cystic lesions is proposed.
