ABSTRACT
This study analyses the evolution of mortality recorded during the last seventy years in the small rural village of Teabo, Yucatan, Mexico, aiming to identify general mortality trends and changes in the principle causes of death. These are put into relationship with the documented epidemias and improvements of local medical and sanitary services, in order to contribute with new indicators of rural public health. With this aim, the public birth and death records between 1930 and 1999 were consulted and compared to the information by the INEGI Population and Housing Census of the decades under study. The present results indicate a decrease in general mortality and an increase in life expectancy in Teabo during the last seventy years, partially related to the improving sanitary infrastructure. The overall drop in mortality is accompanied by changes in the leading causes of death, as lethal infectious diseases diminish in importance and are replaced by cardio-vascular and oncological affections.REFERENCES
