ABSTRACT
Introduction. Anopheles albimanus has been considered as the main vector of human malaria in Central America. Methoprene is a synthetic juvenile hormone and it has been widely used in the control of mosquito larvae and pupae. This research paper describes experiments or trials carried out under laboratory conditions with a granular formulation of methoprene (Altosid-G 1.5%) and
An. albimanus larvae.
Objective. The aim of this study was to determine the lethal concentrations (LC
50 LC
95 LC
98) and to evaluate the efficacy and persistence of lethal effect of methoprene (using LC
95) on
An. albimanus under laboratory conditions.
Material and Methods. The efficacy and persistence of methoprene on
An. albimanus colonized larvae was evaluated using the lethal concentration 95.0 % (LC
95=0.150 ppm) at 0 (initial day), 7, 15, 30 and 60 days post-treatment.
Results. According to the results obtained, at 0 and 7 days post-treatment, the efficacy of the product was very satisfactory and showed a pupal mortality rate of 95.0 % and 75.33 % respectively. However, the percentage of dead pupae in treated water diminished at (15 days=47.50 %; 30 days=44.66 %; 60 days = 42.66 %).
Conclusions. This granular formulation of methoprene has a short residual activity on pupae of
An. albimanus and the permanence of the product in treated water (15, 30 and 60 days posttreatment) negatively affected its effectiveness.
