ABSTRACT
Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a chronic autoimmune disease, predominantly affects young women of reproductive age; however, in 10-20% of the patients the diagnosis is made for the first time in childhood. During the last decades, prognosis has significantly improved, mostly due to early diagnosis and more appropriate immunosuppressive therapies. Studies report five-year survival rates of more than 100% in some patient cohorts, whereas in other settings poor prognosis is still observed. Specific disease features which result in impaired organ function, influence outcome and survival, specifically lupic nephritis and central nervous system affection. Socioeconomic status, age at onset, race and gender has been also implicated in prognosis. In almost all studies, the three most commonly reported causes of death are active SLE or associated organ failure, infection, and cardiovascular diseases. The purpose of this review is to summarize the major prognosis factor for a minor survival.
