ABSTRACT
The non traumatic rotatory luxation atlanto-axial, was first described By Sir Charles Bell in 1830 as a consequence of a syphilitic ulceration of the pharynx; in 1930 the French otolaryngologist Grisel described a similar syndrome following a course of nasopharyngitis, this syndrome has assumed his name. Grisel’s syndrome has been described in the otolaryngologic, neurosurgical, and orthopedic literature as a rare consequence of inflammatory, infectious and/or postsurgical complication in the head an neck, apparently its pathogenesis is related to pharyngo-vertebral vein plexus anastomosis with periodontal vein plexus; Grisel’s syndrome has predilection for pediatric population under 12 years old, and it has been reported in relation with Down and Marfan syndromes. We present in this work, the case of a 10 years old female patient with non traumatic rotatory luxation atlanto-axial with 13 days of evolution. A literature review of Grisel’s syndrome is presented too.
