ABSTRACT
The toxic shock syndrome is a multisystemic infection due to toxin-secreting strains of
Staphylococcus aureus. Criteria for the diagnosis include: fever, erythroderma, hypotension, skin desquamation and dysfunction of 3 or more organ system. Currently 2 types of TSS are described: the classical, menses-associated due to the TSST-1, and the nonmenstrual TSS, secondary to surgical infections, postpartum, trauma or barrier contraceptives, which is due to the enterotoxins B or C.
We present the case of a woman with a surgical infection secondary to an exploratory laparotomy who developed a TSS 5 days after the surgical procedure; she had an isolation of
S. aureus from a blood culture. She was treated with surgical debridament of the wound and antimicrobial therapy with antibiotics against
S. aureus. The outcome was successful.
