ABSTRACT
Objective: The purpose is to analyze differences in child development between children of mothers with chronic diseases like diabetes and heart disease and children of mothers without chronic illnesses.
Material and methods: There were selected 150 children of the pediatric department of the INPer. There were 3 groups: 50 children of mothers with diabetes I and II, 50 children of mothers with heart disease and 50 children of mothers without chronic illnesses. It was used the Nancy Bayley development scale to evaluate mental and motor areas of the children.
Results: The three groups had unequal distribution in the variables of age of application, weeks of gestation, birth weight and Apgar in the first minute of life. The children of mothers with heart disease obtained of 99.2 (± 15.7) in mental scale and de 100 (± 14.2) in motor scale. The children of mothers without chronic diseases obtained 107 (± 16.8) in mental scale and 115 (± 19.9) in motor scale. The children of diabetic mothers obtained 94.4 (± 14.4) in mental scale and 93.3 (± 11.6) in motor scale. The analysis showed significative differences in mental and motor areas, the best levels of development were in the group of children with mothers without chronic diseases, the children of diabetic mothers were the lowest.
Conclusions: The majority of the children presented normal development, but the group of diabetic mothers were lower than the others. Is important to unroll development programs for this children.
