ABSTRACT
Objective: This is a retrospective study about the frequency of ventilatory complications among preterm infants with RDS in a conventional ventilatory mode or synchronized, in the neonatal intensive care unit at the National Institute of Perinatology during 2000.
Material and methods: We studied neonates with birth weight less or equal to 2,500 g, with no congenital malformations and with respiratory difficulty syndrome.
Results: The study included 64 neonates, 39 with conventional ventilation and 25 with synchronized mode. There were no differences in the rate of complications, duration of treatment, mortality; and as for the ventilatory settings, peak inspiratory pressure and the oxygen inspiratory fraction were smaller in the synchronized mode group than in the conventional ventilatory mode (p ‹ 0.005).
Conclusion: The relative risk analysis in this study was not conclusive.
