ABSTRACT
Objective: To determine the tendency of perinatal mortality in a hospital of a second level of attention.Material and methods: It was a retrospective, transversal, and descriptive study. We revised and analyzed of 331 death certificates; the dead occurred from January 1st, 1997 to August 30, 1998, at the General Hospital No. 1 of the Instituto Mexicano del Seguro Social in Saltillo, Coahuila, Mexico. The classification of perinatal death was made accords the Pan-American Organization of the Health and the World Health Organization. Analysis was made by descriptive statistics.
Results: A total of 331 cases were analyzed, the global perinatal mortality was 21.9 for 100 live births. The most corresponded perinatal period of 17 x 1,000. 95% of the pregnant women had prenatal control. A normal delivery occurred in 86% of the cases. In 27% of the cases there was the antecedent of perinatal death; 45% there were premature, 35% had a birth weigh ‹ 1,000 g, 10% had congenital abnormalities, and 9% an infection.
Conclusions: Most cases was premature, male and with a weigh ‹ 1,000 g.
