ABSTRACT
Objective: Describe feeding, hygienic and physical activity habits (life style patterns) during menstrual period in young Mexican women that live in urban areas, to identify life style changes.
Material and methods: This cross-sectional, observational study included a randomized sample of 950 women who answered a questionnaire about menstruation and life style patterns. Participation was voluntary after written informed consent.
Results: 936 women answered the questionnaire completely. The majority of the women was eumenorreic: 78% answered that their period lasted from 3 to 7 days, that they changed their sanitary napkins every 4 hours, and that their menstrual cycle lasted 30 ± 8 days. 52% of the women presented more than three symptoms during the menstrual period and 29% stopped consuming some food during the same period. The education level and income level were negatively related with popular knowledge about menstruation and changes in their life style during this period. Almost 20% of the women had popular knowledge about this subject.
Conclusions: Habits changes during menstruation are related with education level, income level and popular knowledge.
