ABSTRACT
Objective: To determine whether pregnancy induced hypertension (PIH) may have any effect
over premature (≤ 36) newborn infants blood pressure (BP).
Material and methods: We conducted a comparative, prospective, analytic, cohort trial in a
third level hospital facility. Infants born to a preeclamptic mother, with a gestational age ≤ 36
weeks were deemed acceptable for study entry, and newborn infants within the same gestational
age group that were born from normotensive mothers were included as their controls.
We performed several blood pressures determination at two sites: right arm and right leg at
24, 48 and 72 hours of life. The statistic analysis used were mean, standard deviation. For
comparisons between groups we used χ
2 and student test.
Results: During the first 72 hours of life the systolic, diastolic and mean blood pressure
increased in both groups. However, the blood pressure determination at the right leg was
statistically higher among the newborn infants from preeclamptic mothers than did in the
control group.
Conclusions: During the first 72 hours of life the right leg blood pressure, in the preeclamptic
mother group, was significantly higher. Thus, we though that his group of patients may need
a follow up to know if the blood pressure value fall to normal percentiles over the following
years and whether this finding may be associated with hypertension during adulthood.
