ABSTRACT
Objective: To establish the relationship between the degree and duration of arterial hypertension with changes in ocular fundus using Puig Solanes’ classification. We correlated the renal failure and its association with other diseases.
Material and methods: Patients with arterial hypertension, eclampsia, pre-eclampsia and HELLP syndrome were included from January 2003 to December 2004. All patients were studied with indirect ophthalmoscopy under pharmacological mydriasis with tropicamide and phenilephrine. All explorations were made by two different examiners, one retinologist and one fellow in retina.
Results: We found a relation with chronic arterial hypertension and angiosclerosis angiopathy (60%), the minimal, severe pre-eclampsia and eclampsia were associated with tonic angiopathy (16, 20 and 4%), and HELLP syndrome was related to neuroretinopathy (66.6%).
Conclusions: We found that patients with less than 1 year of arterial hypertension suffer tonic changes in arterial vessels, and with more than 5 years with more severe changes in the retina. Most patients with arterial hypertension have renal disease.
