ABSTRACT
Introduction: To describe clinical and demographic features of patients with sympathetic ophthalmia (SO).
Methods: Patients with SO diagnosis were identified in the hospital database. The medical records of these patients were reviewed for details of the inciting event, presentation, treatment, and visual acuity.
Results: A total of 30 patients were diagnosed with SO. Eleven patients were eliminated due to lack of monitoring or incomplete data. 19 patients, 12 females and 7 males with an age range of 24 to 69 years, and an average age of 49.2 years. SO occurred after accidental trauma in 12 patients and following ocular surgery in 7 patients (Extracapsular cataract surgery was responsible for 2 cases, vitreoretinal surgery in 2 cases and trabeculectomy in 3 cases). Five eyes showed anterior granulomatous uveitis (2 as isolated anterior uveitis and 3 as panuveitis ) at presentation and 13 patients had panuveitis and 6 anterior uveitis. The fundus lesions included exudative retinal detachment (3 eyes), yellowishwhite mid-peripheral lesions (4 eyes), optic disc oedema (2 eyes) and vasculitis (2 eyes). The final postreatment visual acuity was ≥20/80 in 13 (68.4%) cases. 11 patients received systemic corticosteroids and 8 patients also received immunosuppression.
Conclusions: In this series, ocular trauma was the major cause of SO. A good outcome was possible in most cases if an early diagnosis was made and immunosuppressive treatment started promptly.
