ABSTRACT
During the period from July 1996 to June 1997 the two clinics of the programme International Donkey Protection Trust (IDPT), International League for the Protection of Horses (ILPH) and Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Mexico (UNAM) assisted donkeys, mules and horses (21,505), and treated different pathological conditions. Work continued in the states of Puebla, Tlaxcala, Guerrero, Guanajuato, Oaxaca, Hidalgo, State of Mexico and the Federal District. Activities were initiated in the State of Michoacan. Efforts to improve the welfare at the animal market of San Bernabe in the State of Mexico continue. The authorities have shown more interest, however, progress is not yet satisfactory. Two competitions were held for the best cared for donkey, mule and horse, one at the rubbish dump of Ciudad Nezahualcoyotl in the State of Mexico and the other one in San Juan Tepulco, state of Puebla. Team members participated in two congresses with four papers. The two senior veterinarians spent four weeks each in the United Kingdom, where they visited the headquarters of the two organizations and also the new Equine Clinics of the University of Glasgow. As in past years, there has been great interest in this programme among students, and as many possible of them have accepted to do their social service or practical work required to obtain the diploma of specialization for equine practitioners.REFERENCES
