ABSTRACT
The article describes a number of conditions observed during pregnancy, which are usually considered psychosomatic. These include very common conditions such as ptyalism hiperemesis gravidarum and pica, and less frequent ones such as denial of pregnancy in its different manifestations. The pregnant woman with multiple somatic complains that have no basis on any specific condition is a frequent presentation in obstetric practices. Conditions such as somatoform disorders, hypochondriacal tendencies, somatization disorder are discussed. In all of these there is frequently a history of traumatic experiences in the life of the patient. The evidence available for all of these conditions is reviewed in terms of epidemiology, predisposing factors, possible physiological and psychological issues involved and treatment strategies.
