ABSTRACT
Homocysteine (Hcy) is an aminoacid sulphide intermediate product of metabolism of methionine. The prevalence of hyperhomocysteinemia in the general population is between 5 and 10%, but the percentage may be up to 30% in the population over 65 years. Hcy may affect the bone obstructing the formation of a bone by inhibiting the formation and differentiation of osteoblasts (OB) and/or a reduction in the activity of the OB. Affects bone resorption by an increased formation and differentiation of osteoclasts (OC). Infusion can cause a small bone with a subsequent change in the role of OB and OC. Another possibility is that Hcy directly interact with proteins of the extracellular matrix leading to structural changes and a reduced stability. Hyperhomocysteinemia is linked as a potential risk factor for osteoporosis. These findings can be attributed to the factor that elevated levels of homocystinuria may interfere with collagen cross-linked and therefore can lead to an increased risk of fracture.
