The term “Laser” is an acronym for “Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation”. It is a device that emits electromagnetic radiation
(EMR) by the process of “stimulated emission”. Light laser is coherent, monochromatic and collimated in contrast to other light sources of EMR.
These features allow its use to a lot of purposes namely, medical purposes. In 1964, CO2 laser was invented and is still one of the most useful surgical
lasers. Equal to Erbium:YAG, CO2 laser is also used for skin resurfacing not only in normal mode, in which skin is attained by laser beam uniformly,
but also in micro-fractional mode, in which laser beam emits radiation as a shower. Recently, there are lasers used in cutaneous rejuvenation
that penetrate into dermis without destruction of epidermis. They are called micro-fractional non ablative lasers. In 1983 theory of tissue
selective phototermolysis was presented: laser beam can be selectively absorbed by a substance with the same wavelength of the laser. This effect
gave origin to a variety of specialized lasers acting in certain tissues or pigments like haemoglobin, tatoo pigment and skin and hair melanin. Intense
pulsed light is not a laser device but is used according the same rules and allow to select specific wavelengths useful in the treatment of photorejuvenation
and epilation.
