ABSTRACT
Purpose: The results on the clinical and endoscopic evolution of ulcerative colitis (UC) of the treatment with Hyperbaric Oxygenation (HBO).
Methods: Are presented in this article. 43 patients were recruited in the Service of Coloproctology of the Clinical-Surgical Hospital “Hermanos Ameijeiras” (La Habana, Cuba) for this study. All the patients were receiving Azulfidine: 4 grams a day. The 43 recruited patients were assigned to any of two groups: Group A: Treatment-Group: 23 subjects received 15 HBO sessions of 1 hour of duration each one. Group B: Control-Group: 20 patients. There was improvement in 8 out of 10 indicators selected to assess the effectiveness of HBO in achieving relief of the UC clinical symptoms, and improvement of endoscopically observed lesions.
Results: There were dramatic changes in the expression of pain, and the passage of blood and mucus in the stools, and in the vascular pattern of the mucosa, and the presence of blood, mucus and pus in the mucosa.
Conclusion: It is concluded that HBO can be a useful adjuvant therapeutical tool in the treatment of UC.
