ABSTRACT
The Ebers papyrus of ancient Egypt is dated at 1534 B.C. and corresponds to the XVIII dynasty. It shows a series of ocular ailments present in the pharaonic period and their many treatments. Amongst the ailments mentioned are stye, cornea opacities, cataracts, trachoma and ocular trauma. The medicines most used were galena, malachite, ochre, natron, honey, milk, placenta, acacia, laudanum, castor oil plant. Ophthalmology as a specialty has been practiced since those ancient times.REFERENCES
