ABSTRACT
Introduction. Most of neck masses counts with a specific cause. These masses appear in specific sites depending on the age group, which allows a systematic boarding to establish a diagnosis and, as well, a plan of handling for each case. Objective. To determine the initial symptomatology and form of presentation, as well as the exploratory characteristics in patients with masses in neck. Methods. A retrospective study was made in a period of five years that included patients with masses in neck valued as far as increase of volume, size, location, time of evolution, local symptoms, general symptoms and histopathologic diagnosis. Results. Eighty files were evaluated (69% of women and 31% of men with an average age of 51.4 years). In the evaluation, they were observed: increase of volume (80%), incidental data (20%), masses in the previous triangle (57%), submandibular location (25%), in parotid region (12%) and later triangle (4%). Also: movable masses (40%), nonmovable masses (44%), with soft consistency (65%), related to adenomegalias (24%), local symptoms (19%), general symptoms (26%), painful masses (29%), pathology in gland thyroid (45%), in submandibular gland (21%), in parotid (12%), in parathyroid (8%), in locations different from the previous ones (4%). Finally: benign tumor pathology (52%), malignant tumor pathology (9%), inflammatory (17%), congenital (10%) and infectious (5%).REFERENCES
