ABSTRACT
Objective. To determine the effectiveness of Semont and Epley maneuvers for treatment of benign paroxistic postural vertigo using spinal collar and vestibular rehabilitation exercises, without resorting any other maneuver or medicine (for example, labyrinthic restrainers).
Design. Analytical clinical prospective study made in 40 patients, divided in two groups of 20 individuals each one, that displayed a picture of benign postural vertigo, diagnosed with positive Dix-Hallpike maneuver. On 20 patients, canalicular Epley replacement maneuver was applied, and to other 20 maneuver of Semont. Spinal collar was placed by 48 hours and later valuation was made. After it, patients continued with vestibular rehabilitation exercises.
Results. No significant differences were observed on both groups as far as results, since the diminution in the intensity of the picture was the same on both maneuvers: to month of made the maneuvers, little recurrence was observed in those with Semont, like in those with Epley.
Conclusions. Correctly applied, Semont and Epley maneuvers are effective in patients with benign paroxistic postural vertigo, discarding other pathologies and with no need some other type of maneuver or medical treatment.
